In translation " the flower of the lily" , there are many legends that surround its origins but it is certainly best known to represent French Royalty in heraldry, who adopted the symbol around 500 AD. It is thought to be a stylized Iris (part of the Lily family) that grows on the banks of the river Lis in France.
